image of publication "MODIGLIANI"Title: MODIGLIANI dessin à boire
Author: edited by Chiara Filippini and Gregorio Rossi
Publisher: Edizione Carte Segrete
Genre: Art
Subject: Modigliani Amedeo
Pages: 96
Year of publication: 2009
The town council of Capannori decided to promote this exhibition in order to determine Modigliani’s professional training in Italy and in the panorama of the Tuscan painting, beggining with the Macchiaioli and improving with the study of the Ancients, and to study the dessins à boire, the sketches with which our artist paid for his drinks.
The exhibition that took place in Villa Mazzarosa, the only historical villa of Lucca that belonged to a single family, was the first one deeply concerned with the sketches that Modigliani used to paint extemporaneously, mainly when he was in Paris, and that were unfortunately mislaid.
The exhibition has been one of the most important initiatives related to Amedeo Modigliani and it celebrates the centenary of the return of the artist to Italy. The town council of Capannori gladly collaborated with the Modigliani Institute, which has shown original documents and Reproductions of the artist. Emphasis is given to the fact that Modigliani’s return to Italy was mainly due to his study of the Ancient and visited the marble quarry of Carrara from which  Michelangelo got his marble.
Modigliani returned to Italy in 1909 and lived mostly in Lucca, where he could study the statues of the ancient with the sketches, the exhibition showed didactic panels related to the “drink ticket” and the worship of drinking. There was a striking reconstruction of the façade of the bistrot Rosalie which could appeal experts and visitors. The worship of drinking, in Capannori, has deep roots, being wine one of most esteemed products of our territory also used to link the themes of the exhibition to the traditions of Capannori.

image of publication "CAPANNORIANTHOLOGY"Title: CAPANNORIANTHOLOGY
Author: various authors. Edited by Luciano Luciani and Lorella Sartini
Publisher: Giulio Perrone Editore
Genre: literature
Subject: anthology of writers from Capannori
Pages: 160
Year of publication: 2009
A territory is like a good tale: it tells you a story and lets you know characters. And if the territory was populated by peasants and in the last thirty years has known, as the rest of our country, radical transformations within economic, social and cultural ambits, the plot thickens and gets complicated while the characters multiply. Indeed, if we want to talk about Capannori, we need to resort to a solid anthology: fifteen authors that were born in Capannori or have lived significant experiences between the plain and the hills of our territory. Unsurprisingly, the fil rouge of that anthology is the feeling of belonging to this land. Their roots are deeply dipped into the earth of the biggest rural municipality of Europe and even more morbidly attached to this land than to their homes.
Luciano Luciani, roman, lives and works in Lucca. He is a teacher and a journalist and collaborates with numerous local and national newspapers.
Lorella Sartini, born in Pisa, lives and works in Lucca. She is a journalist and collaborates with local and regional newspapers.

Puccini knew the features of our territory and visited the gorgeous Villa Reale of Marlia and the town of Porcari, once part of the municipality.

image of publication "NELLE RIME DI GIGI"Title: NELLE RIME DI GIGI (nella parlata di Lucca appena fòra)
Author: Giovanni Giangrandi
Publisher: Collana editoriale Capannori Trentanni
Genre: literature
Subject: poetry
Pages: 126
Year of publication: 2008
Free and easy, the poetries of this collection give off all the heat and the taste of past little things.
They have a strong evocative power and that is certainly due to their language, the vernacular which reminds us of our roots and of our past.
Forgotten words and sounds suddenly resurface from our memory, filtered by what we recollect of our grandparent’s discourses.
Giangrandi’s texts are both informal and artful. They remind us of the past everyday life, the rural atmosphere and the wise popular philosophy.
Giovanni is a refined vernacular “researcher” who gives importance to our linguistic and cultural patrimony. He carefully searches in the past, looking for what has nearly been forgotten.
His language, sometimes considered, sometimes subdued, is the one spoken by the countrymen in the courts of Capannori.
Giovanni Giangrandi was born in Lucca on the 18th of March 1949. He was a reckless young fellow who began working quite early. He did military service and came back to his studies. He took his diploma, becoming a geometer, and in 2004 conceived a passion for vernacular texts thanks to his reading the poetry of Gino Custer De Nobili.
He is the kind of person able to adapt himself to circumstances and to test himself over and over again.

Publisher: edited by Centro Culturale Compitese
Genre: botany

The botanical discipline which studies spontaneous edible plants is known as phytoalimurgy. The modern Feed Science is discovering and revaluing the peculiarities of some traditional ancient dishes. Numerous rural areas maintain cooking practices that are now being rediscovered even if once related to the necessity of saving money and finding local raw materials.
Old women were charged with the harvesting of wild plants and they were followed by young children who had to learn how to recognize fresh edible herbs. According to traditions and rural life organization, the harvesting took place at the end of winter or at the beginning of spring, when the supplies were running out.
Wild edible herbs can be divided into two main groups: the first which can be used in great quantities and the second that should be used sparingly. These last ones are the aromatic herbs used to aromatize dishes and which can be bitter, sour, spicy or fibrous.

Memory is not just the recollection of the tragedies which characterized our history. Memory is also knowing the ties between past and present. It is a commitment: the will of preventing the return of horrors and inhumanity.
That democratic, civil and social values that characterized our territory cannot be understood without taking into account the strength of the Resistance opposed to fascism.
Many names, episodes, places and experiences are yet to be discovered in order to reconstruct a whole collective memory.
But local memories, along with national ones, can be listened and presented in contemporary terms. Young people should become sensitive to those passions, feelings and ideals.
Remembering past tragedies becomes the best antidote against their repetitions as well as memory becomes the key for a peaceful future.

Author: Guido Cattolica
Publisher: Comune di Capannori
Genre: Botany
Subject: Camellias
Pages: 105
Year of publication: 2005
Camellia has been known in Europe since few centuries but in China and Japan, the countries which cultivated and studied it for a long time, its history is long and charming.
This unpredictable plant has found a natural habitat in Capannori, on the hills of the Compitese area, and it has perfectly adapted itself to the slopes dotted with olive groves. It grows among the stone walls of the villages and in the gardens of the villas, becoming the chief protagonist of the manifestation "La Mostra delle Antiche Camelie della Lucchesia", that has already gone beyond national borders. Annually, it takes place in March, in the “village of the camellias”, and it attracts thousands of visitors. Abroad the camellia is seen as symbol of Capannori.
This book, written by Guido Cattolica, refers to this wonderful flower.
It is a well-constructed study and the result of his work and passion, obtained through years of efforts and sweat into the greenhouses.
Guido Cattolica is the Tuscan in charge for the Italian Society of the Camellias and member of the Italian Association Cultura del Tè.

image of publication "CAPANNORI ... I SAPORI DEL TERRITORIO con i piatti tipici della tradizione"Title: CAPANNORI ... I SAPORI DEL TERRITORIO con i piatti tipici della tradizione.
Author: Chef Paolo Simonelli. Poetries and glossary in the vernacular of Lucca by Gavorchio (Domenico Bertuccelli).
Publisher: Collana editoriale Capannori - Terra di Toscana
Genre: Cooking
Subject: Recipes
Pages: 64
Year of publication: 2005
We often associate words to tastes. Ancient words tend to be the most evocative, and that is the fil rouge of this book: a good walk among nearly forgotten perfumes, fragrances and dialectal images that can stimulate our senses from the first pages to the last ones.
It is a kind of exchange between lexical and gastronomic knowledge, tastes and languages.
Paolo Simonelli took his diploma in 1977 at the Istituto Alberghiero of Montecatini Terme. He worked in prestigious restaurants and hotels all over the world and, from 1987, he has worked with the town council of Capannori. He was employed in the old people’s home "Casa Gori", in Marlia, where he gained a unique experience from both a human and professional point of view,  rediscovering traditional recipes.  From 1997 he is responsible for the quality control in refectories and has taken part to various manifestations to promote typical local products: Vence, in France, Kecskemet, in Hungary , and London, Bruxelles, Palermo, Vinitaly in Verona and B.I.T. in Milan.
Gavorchio, whose real name is Domenico Bertuccelli, worked for the town council of Capannori and has a real passion for the vernacular. He feels a nostalgia for his childhood with the grandparents and often recalls past tastes, colours and fragrances. Dialectal languages are part of our culture and he decided to collect those “rural pieces” contained in the language before they run the risk of disappearing.
Using this extravagant pen name, "Gavorchio", he began writing vernacular verses. At the present time he is member of the Cultural Association Cesare Viviani and he tries to rediscover and preserve our dialect.
